Menu

Permafrost does not launch until 9 October 2026. These ten are what to play in the meantime — and, more usefully, they tell you which part of Permafrost you are actually waiting for.

Each entry says what it genuinely shares with Permafrost and what it does not. A list that calls all ten "just like Permafrost" is a list that has not played them.

01

The Long Dark

Hinterland Studio · 2017

Closest match No — solo only
What it shares

The coldest survival game ever shipped. Temperature is the antagonist, clothing is layered, and dying of exposure is a normal outcome.

What it doesn't

Strictly single-player and deliberately quiet — no co-op, no base building in Permafrost's sense, no faction pressure.

Play it for

Learning to respect cold as a resource

02

Frostpunk 2

11 bit studios · 2024

Same premise No — solo only
What it shares

A frozen Earth after a climate catastrophe, heat as the currency of survival, and every decision paid for in bodies.

What it doesn't

City management, not first-person survival. You command a society rather than scavenge as one person.

Play it for

The frozen-Earth fiction at scale

03

Winter Survival

DRAGO entertainment · 2024

Same season No — solo only
What it shares

Mountain winter survival with hypothermia, shelter building and a story mode. Thematically near-identical.

What it doesn't

Smaller scope and rougher production. Closer to a survival sim than Permafrost's open-world salvage loop.

Play it for

Winter survival specifically, right now

04

Subnautica: Below Zero

Unknown Worlds · 2021

Cold + base No — solo campaign
What it shares

An arctic setting where cold water and cold air are separate threats, plus a base you build up over time.

What it doesn't

Underwater — the cold is a liquid problem rather than a blizzard problem, and there is no co-op in the campaign.

Play it for

Cold plus base progression done beautifully

05

Icarus

RocketWerkz · 2021

Co-op loop Yes — up to 8
What it shares

Session-based survival where you drop in, work a biome, and extract. Same risk/reward shape as a salvage loop.

What it doesn't

Timed sessions on an alien world, not a persistent frozen Earth. Cold exists but is not the theme.

Play it for

Co-op salvage runs with a hard timer

06

Valheim

Iron Gate AB · 2021

Co-op build Yes — up to 10
What it shares

The definitive co-op base-building survival loop, and its Mountain biome has a genuine freezing mechanic.

What it doesn't

Norse mythology rather than post-climate-collapse, and cold is one biome hazard among many instead of the premise.

Play it for

Co-op building with the best group feel

07

Medieval Dynasty

Render Cube · 2021

Same publisher Co-op added post-launch
What it shares

Same publisher as Permafrost (Toplitz Productions), and the same "build a settlement, survive the winter" skeleton.

What it doesn't

Medieval rather than post-apocalyptic, and dynasty/legacy mechanics replace pure survival tension.

Play it for

Seeing what this publisher does well

08

Green Hell

Creepy Jar · 2019

Deepest systems Yes — up to 4
What it shares

The most detailed survival meter system in the genre — wounds, parasites, macros, all interacting.

What it doesn't

Jungle, not ice. The systems are the same shape but the antagonist is infection rather than cold.

Play it for

If you want the deepest survival simulation

09

Sons of the Forest

Endnight Games · 2023

Co-op threat Yes — up to 8
What it shares

Co-op survival with base building, seasonal weather and a hostile world that keeps pressure on your shelter.

What it doesn't

Horror-first. The antagonists are creatures and cannibals rather than the temperature.

Play it for

Co-op survival with real threat

10

Frostpunk

11 bit studios · 2018

Same premise No — solo only
What it shares

The original frozen-city survival game. Heat radius, generator upgrades and impossible moral choices.

What it doesn't

Pure city management with no avatar. You never scavenge — you legislate.

Play it for

The coldest city-builder ever made

Which one should you actually start?

You are here for the cold

Start with The Long Dark. It is the only game on this list where cold is not a hazard but the entire design, and it will teach you more about exposure management than any Permafrost guide can before launch.

You are here for the co-op

Start with Valheim if you want building with friends, or Icarus if you want timed salvage runs that match Permafrost's loop shape.

You are here for the premise

Start with Frostpunk. A frozen Earth, heat as currency, and the moral weight that comes with deciding who stays warm.

You are here for the systems

Start with Green Hell. It has the deepest interacting meter system in the genre, and it is the best preparation for Permafrost's cold/hunger/exhaustion triangle.
