Is it worth buying now?
The honest launch-day answer is a trade-off, not a verdict. The content floor is high for an Early Access title: the studio says the build already ships multiple biomes, hundreds of items, building blueprints, crafting recipes, the opening story, side quests and full 1–4 player co-op, with a 30+ hour story floor named for completionists. If you want to shape the game and don't mind EA churn, that is a lot to do on day one.
The counterweight is the standard Early Access one. The developer frames the game as a work in progress, expects Early Access to last at least 12 months, and the price is likely to rise as content lands — so the lower launch price is partly a thank-you for early adopters. Buy now for influence and volume; wait for a calmer, cheaper-at-full-price, more polished 1.0 if you only want a finished product.
The launch-window rough edges to watch
Early Access titles ship incomplete by definition. For Permafrost, the risks worth watching are the ones the developer and pre-launch coverage have already surfaced — framed as watch for, not confirmed broken, because day-one builds change fast:
- Save stability. Save and progression reliability is the most-cited EA concern for this title. Back up your saves and report issues early.
- UI / UX friction. Inventory, crafting and shelter menus are where Early Access survival games tend to bite. Expect iteration.
- AI voice work. The studio acknowledges the AI voice direction puts some players off; it is a presentation call, not a gameplay blocker.
- Performance in whiteouts. Heavy snow particle and weather loads are the usual frame-rate risk in a cold-survival game — relevant if you are near the minimum spec.
- Balance churn. With at least 12 months of EA ahead, warmth, hunger and threat tuning will move. Treat any "unmeasured" number here as not-yet-verified.
The fastest path to influence is the official Discord (discord.gg/toplitz), which the studio named as its primary feedback hub. The Steam news hub is where patch notes and the weekly "Signal" dev-blog land.

What changes from here
The moment the build is live, the "unmeasured" lists on this site become measurable. The cold-survival estimator's coefficients, every biome and system page, and the changelog start recording real numbers instead of decision rules — as players measure them, not before. If you want to watch that happen, the changelog is where each measurement lands first.
