The premise, as officially stated

Permafrost is unusual among survival games for shipping a stated narrative rather than a blank slate. Everything below comes from official trailers and press releases — no fan theorising, and no plot points invented to fill a page. Where the story is only implied, this page says so.

Rook — an engineer, not a survivor

Official copy is specific about this: you play Rook, "an engineer with the skills to rebuild, but little wilderness experience". That framing is the design thesis. Your advantage is construction and repair — shelters, machines, fragile reclaimed technology — not combat or woodcraft. Expect the game to reward the first and punish the second.

Rook is pulled into the cold by a radio signal from a long-lost friend. The journey is not "go survive"; it is a search with a name attached to it.

Icarus

That friend is Icarus. Across official announcements the objective is stated consistently: take on the role of Rook, step into the white hell, find Icarus, unravel the mystery of the shattering moon, and help humanity cling to existence.

Worth noting: "Icarus" is also the name of an unrelated survival game (RocketWerkz, 2021). Search results mix the two. On this site, Icarus always means the character in Permafrost.

The Shattering — what broke the world

Earth is locked in endless winter after a series of catastrophes that culminated in the shattering of the moon. The September 2026 story trailer gives the fullest official account of Earth's downfall and the collapse of civilisation; the gamescom material describes the same event as covering the planet in a thick coat of snow and ice.

The consequence for the player is environmental, not cosmetic: sub-zero temperatures that drop further in the "relentless cold zones", where the salvage is worth the risk and the exposure bill is highest.

Where story meets survival

This is the part most pre-launch sites get backwards. The story is not cutscene dressing — it is the reason the map has a shape:

  • Exploration-gated progression — restoring shelters and repairing machines is how you push deeper, and it is also Rook's actual skillset. See exploration-gated progression.
  • Frozen cities — civilisation is buried, so the ruins are both the richest salvage and the most contested ground. See frozen city and factions & territory.
  • The dog — "rescued from the ruins", the dog scouts, warns and carries, and is explicitly framed as what keeps you human when the silence gets to be too much. See dog companion.

What is not yet known

  • Whether the story is delivered through cutscenes, audio logs or environmental storytelling
  • How much narrative content ships in Early Access versus later updates
  • Whether co-op players each experience the story, or follow Rook
  • How the mystery of the shattered moon resolves

These get answered by the launch build on 9 October 2026 and logged on the changelog. Until then, this page states only what official material supports.
